SS-31 (elamipretide) is a synthetic, cell-permeable tetrapeptide developed for investigation in mitochondrial biology and bioenergetics research. It belongs to the Szeto–Schiller class of aromatic–cationic peptides, a family studied for their ability to localize to mitochondria under experimental conditions.
The peptide is designed to accumulate at the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it has been shown in laboratory models to associate with cardiolipin, a phospholipid involved in electron transport chain organization and mitochondrial membrane structure.
SS-31 is widely utilized in preclinical and translational research examining mitochondrial signaling, membrane integrity, and oxidative phosphorylation dynamics. Its molecular properties have also supported investigation in advanced research programs focused on mitochondrial dysfunction–associated biological pathways, without reference to clinical outcomes or therapeutic use.
