Tesofensine is a synthetic small-molecule research compound (not a peptide) studied as a triple monoamine reuptake inhibitor. This guide summarizes its molecular pharmacology for laboratory reference only.

Classification note: Tesofensine is a small organic molecule, not a peptide; it is labeled accordingly as a distinct research-chemical class.

Mechanism of action (in vitro)

Tesofensine inhibits presynaptic reuptake of three monoamine neurotransmitters — dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin — by acting at their respective transporters (DAT, NET, SERT). In neurochemical assays this increases the persistence of these neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft, making the compound a tool for studying central monoamine signaling.

Preclinical research context

Tesofensine is used in preclinical neuroscience and metabolic-signaling models to probe monoaminergic pathways. Findings reported in the literature are observations within these model systems characterizing transporter pharmacology and neurochemical signaling, and are not indicators of any human outcome.

Laboratory handling & storage

As a small-molecule reference material (commonly supplied as capsules or powder), tesofensine is stored cool, dry and protected from light per the accompanying documentation. Because it is not a peptide, aqueous reconstitution guidance for peptides does not apply.

Analytical characterization

Research-grade reference material should be accompanied by a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis: reverse-phase HPLC establishing chromatographic purity, mass spectrometry confirming molecular identity against the theoretical mass, and identification of the independent testing laboratory. Batch documentation is published on our Lab Reports page.

Research applications

Typical uses include monoamine-transporter binding and uptake assays and comparative studies of reuptake-inhibitor pharmacology.
